Review – S.H.Figuarts – Akiba Red

Name – Akiba Red
Series – Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger
Product Line – S.H.Figuarts
Manufacturer – Bandai
Released – June 2012

Three individuals (a Super Sentai otaku, a cosplay otaku, and a closet anime otaku) are chosen by a beautiful scientist to become the “Unofficial Sentai Akibaranger” and “protect Akihabara” from a powerful group villains that exist in their delusions. However, the fight eventually gets literally real when the villains begin to materialize in the real world.

Akibaranger is a really fun show to watch if you are familiar with the older Sentai series so you’ll know what the heck they are talking about. Each episode will have a ton, and I mean a ton of reference of the older Super Sentai series. It’s really sad that it lasted for only 12 episodes, and the last being a summary. It’s really a fun run for any Super Sentai or Tokustatsu fans.

Nobuo Akagi/Akiba Red is an average 29-year-old man who works as a delivery boy at Sasaki Pom Poko Delivery and still lives with his mother. He loves the Super Sentai Series and is shown to have vast knowledge of the franchise, often having delusions about being a hero. He is also shown to have great interest in an anime called Nijiyome Academy Z-Cune Aoi. Whenever Akagi transforms into Akiba Red, his roll call involves recommending a warrior or villain from a past Super Sentai series while imitating their signature poses.
There you go, the hot blooded, leader and red senshi of the Akibarangers. Akiba Red!

One of the greatest aspect of this release is the packaging! This is definitely my favorite out of all the releases. Colorful and clean, the Hikonin stamp is on the blister too. Awesome!

Comes with the standard joints/articulations for the S.H.F series. I still hope that they gave him die-cast feet, Bandai has been quite inconsistent for adding on die-cast and non die-cast parts. One reason might be that they are cutting costs for newer releases. Prices for S.H.Fs are really increasing, I can’t really bitch about this since the quality has improved so much since the first releases (Kamen Rider The Next S.H.Fs)

Quality is really good for this release, and I believe it’s the first time that they used rubber on the figures itself (Mainly scarfs, antennas are made of rubber). Check out the shoulder joints, not many knew that it is articulated with a swivel joint. The one pose that I can’t have him make is to have both hands to hold the Moe Moe Z-Cune, the chest armor hinders the movement for you to pose with as Akiba Red wears an armor unlike the standard Sentai suits which don’t.

Sculpt of the helmet is really clean, and as superb paint job. Do take note of the gold part when you are choosing your figurines, the paint is quite inconsistent and there are bleeding or bubbles on most. I had a nub mark on the bottom of the helmet, which I believe most of you will have the same issue. But this is rather easy to fix with an exacto knife.
Really nice looking clear plastic on the chest showing the details on the inside, the white paint was a little bit disappointing. I’ve got scratches on mine and it does look like it needs more layers to improve the color.

Not much accessories are included, I still wished that it came with the doll mode Moe Moe Z-Cune tho.

The first press comes with the Tamashii Base for Akiba Red and the upcoming Blue and Yellow. If your purchases doesn’t come with this, you might have just been conned out of it!

As a Tokusatsu fan, this is a must get figure to go along with your Super Sentai collections. And also as a fan, this show is a must watch. Heart warming, hot blooded and awesomeness makes you cringe on why did they ended this so early. I highly recommend this as for great playability, looks and tons articulation.

Now for the poses!

And that’s all! So keep buying on Impulse and Nerd out!
